Bentley Cars

Started by Walter Owen Bentley in 1919 with production of the 3-litre made available from 1921. This car wins Le Mans in 1924, with a 'speed model' 3-litre introduced with improved performance.

1927 saw the release of the Bentley 4.5 litre at Olympia featuring a 140bhp engine. A win for Bentley 4.5 litre in 1928, this is the third win for Bentley at Le Mans

The Bentley Speed Six is launched in 1929 with a 6.5 litre engine which produces 180bhp @ 3500rpm. 1929 also sees a fourth Le-Mans victory is a Speed Six. A total of 50 supercharged 4.5 litre or 'Blower Bentleys' are produced.

During the worldwide recession of the 1930s, Bentley is taken over by Rolls-Royce who move production to Derby. 3.5 litre engine production ceases and is replaced with a 4.5 litre engine from 1937 onwards.

During the war production is turned over to producing aircraft parts with production of cars starting again in 1946 with the Mark VI which is later to evolve into the R-type. A lightweight fastback body is introduced on the Continental chassis, known as the R-type, capable of speeds over 120mph which at the time is the fastest four seater in the world.

In 1959 the first Bentley to be fitted with a V8, the S2 and the S3 series, are introduced with a 6.2 litre engine.

The first of the 'Square' Bentleys, the T2 is introduced in 1965, with the T2 model introduced in 1977 with the Bentley Mulsanne being introduced in 6.75 litre V8 engine. A turbo version of this model is released in 1982 with 328bhp and a 0-60 time of 7 seconds, which for a 4960.39 lb (2250 kg) was impressive.

The early 1990s saw the introduction of the Continental R with a new body but the same 6.75 litre engine as older models, producing 315bhp and a staggering 485 NM of torque. The later model Continental T and Arnarge T both use the same engine as previous models but now producing 400bhp and 522Nm in the Continental T and 450bhp and 645 Nm in the Arnarge T. Giving both cars highly respectable 0-60 times of 5.8 secs and 5.5 secs respectively.

The 2000's have seen the introduction of new models, the Continental GT and the Continental Flying Spur now using a smaller 6 litre twin turbo charged engine.
